Muscle spasms are usually caused by insufficient calcium and/or magnesium in the muscle tissue. Calcium is essential for the muscle to contract and Magnesium is essential for the muscle to relax. Therefore, a lack of calcium usually causes muscle aches and a lack of Magnesium can cause cramping and spasms.

Increase your levels of these minerals through supplements. The chelated form is much more absorbable than the metal forms.

Also, increase your water intake. Not your fluid (juices, coffee, soda). You should drink at least 8 8-oz glasses of water every day.

Lactic acid build up can cause cramping and muscle soreness when associated with exercise. It is a natural byproduct of anaerobic metabolism. Increasing your water intake will help your body process out these toxins.
