Distilled Water, a sufficient quantity. | | |
Mix the liquid extract with an equal volume of the water, and allow to stand in a cool place for twenty-four hours; then filter, and wash the residue on the filter with a small quantity of distilled water until colourless, keeping the washings separate. Next add to the filtrate sufficient acetic acid to give a very faintly acid reaction, and distil by the heat of a water-bath until the distillate measures about 52.5 (10 ½ fluid ounces). Reserve this portion of the distillate, continue the distillation to recover the remaining alcohol, and evaporate the residue on the water-bath to about 42.5 (8 ½ fluid ounces). Allow the extract to cool, pour off the clear liquid, and add it to the reserved distillate; then rinse the dish with the washings obtained in the first part of the process, and evaporate the washings, if necessary, so that, when they are added to the mixed liquids, the product will measure 100 (20 fluid ounces). The finished product should yield from 2 to 2.25 per cent. of alkaloids when assayed by the B.P. process for Extractum Ipecacuanhae Liquidum. Miscible liquid extract of ipecacuanha forms a bright mixture with detannated sherry and does not deposit readily when mixed with aqueous liquids.
Dose.—As an expectorant 3 to 12 centimils (0.03 to 0.12 milliliters) (½ to 2 minims); as an emetic, 10 to 12 decimils (1.0 to 1.2 milliliters) (15 to 20 minims).
