8. Scyphophorus pyxidatus, Hook.—Cup-Moss.

Spicil. p. 26; Lichen Pyxidatus, Linn.; Muscus pyxidatus, Dale, Pharm.; Cup-moss.—This species (frequently mixed with S. fimbriatus, Hook., and sometimes with S. cocciferus, Hook.) is the Cup-moss of the shops. It was recommended by Dr. Willis [Pharmaceutice Rationalis, pars 2da, p. 49, 1678.] as a remedy for whooping-cough [See, also Dillenii, Dissertatio de Lichene Pyxidato, in Schlegel's Thesaurus Materia Medica, t.i.p. 307, Lipsiae, 1793.]. He gave it in drachm doses, in the form of powder, decoction, and syrup.
