Botanical name: 

Characters.—A small and imperfectly known order of endogenous plants, with tuberous roots, leavet with curved parallel veins, hermaphrodite regular flowers, a petaloid tubular, 6-parted perianth, 6 stamens, a 1-celled inferior ovary, and seeds with fleshy albumen.

Properties.—The tuberous roots are bitter and acrid, but by cultivation become larger and milder. They yield a large quantity of nutritive farina.
