336. CEANOTHUS.—NEW JERSEY TEA. RED ROOT. The root of Ceano'thus america'na Linné. Habitat: North America. About 300 mm. (12 in.) long, and 12 to 25 mm. (½ to 1 in.) thick, contorted and knotty; bark reddish brown, thin, inclosing a tough, light brown wood, finely rayed; odor none; taste astringent and bitter. It contains ceanothine, tannin, mucilage, etc. Astringent and expectorant. Dose: 10 to 30 gr. (0.6 to 2 Gm.).
