92. Matico.—Matico, N.F.

Botanical name: 

The leaves of Pi'per angustifo'lium Ruiz et Pavon, are readily recognized by the prominent veining of their under surface; upper surface dull green, tessellated or checkered. Odor slight, taste aromatic; contains volatile oil (2 per cent.), resin, tannin, a bitter principle and artanthic acid. Used as an aromatic, stimulant, tonic and styptic. Special action on mucous membrane. Dose: ½ to 2 dr. (2 to 8 Gm.).
