Baycuru Root

Baycuru Root.—This is the root of a Brazilian plant, probably the Statice brasiliensis Boiss. (Fam. Plumbaginaceae), which is used by the natives as a discutient in glandular swellings and as an astringent gargle. F. A. Dalpe (A. J. P., xiv, 361) believed that he has found in it an alkaloid, baycurine, besides volatile oil, gum glucose, etc. O. Symes found in it 12.5 per cent. of tannic acid. (Newer Mat. Med., 51.)
